What happens if a private consultant recommends tests or investigations?

If you choose to see a consultant privately, we would normally expect any investigations arising from that consultation, including blood tests, scans, X-rays, ECGs, or other diagnostic procedures, to be arranged and funded through the private healthcare provider as part of that episode of care.

Private consultants have direct access to private investigation services and are responsible for arranging the tests they consider necessary to support their diagnosis and management recommendations.

Why can't the Practice routinely arrange these tests?

Park End Surgery operates as an NHS Practice and must use NHS resources fairly and consistently for all patients. It is generally not appropriate for investigations requested as part of a private consultation to be transferred to the NHS, as this would result in the NHS subsidising a privately initiated episode of care.

In addition, the GP may not have sufficient information to justify the investigation, may not agree that the test is clinically indicated, or may require further assessment before deciding whether an NHS investigation is appropriate.

Are there any exceptions?

There may occasionally be circumstances where your GP considers that an investigation recommended by a private consultant is clinically necessary and appropriate to arrange under the NHS. This decision remains at the discretion of the GP, who must be satisfied that:

• The investigation is clinically indicated.
• The request is consistent with local NHS guidelines and pathways.
• The GP is willing to take clinical responsibility for the request.
• Arranging the investigation represents appropriate use of NHS resources.

A recommendation from a private consultant does not automatically mean that the investigation will be arranged by the Practice.

What do I need to do?

If a private consultant recommends investigations and you would like your GP to consider arranging them under the NHS, please provide a copy of the consultant's letter. Your GP will review the information and decide whether NHS referral, investigation, or management is appropriate.
